AFW Presents: The Films of Hanna Chetwin

8pm Tues 31st October
The Brunswick Green, 313/315 Sydney Road, Brunswick.
$10 tix. 16mm projection.

AFW is delighted to present a program of 16mm films from one of AFW's own – Hanna Chetwin. Over the last decade, Hanna has been one of the most active filmmakers in our lab, finishing close to a dozen works, all on film. In this selection we will see some of her more abstract, camera-less (direct film) explorations of texture and grain, as well as her playful use of the Bolex camera in landscape, nature and self-portrait modes. We will bookend the program with two of her expanded cinema works; Salt, a two screen work exploring the crusty surface of one of Victoria's pink lakes, and Opaquing, a breathtaking three projector 'direct film' frenzy! Notable in Hanna's work is her use of the contact printer as a creative tool to composit, colour and complexify her images. Come see what a local artist has been able to achieve through dedication and a lot of DIY hard work at AFW lab.

PROGRAM:

Salt (2018) 15 mins. Salt combines footage of a vast pink salt lake in northern Victoria with footage of home-grown salt crystals and collections of other natural forms, such as dead coral and seeds. Filmed in close-up and rhythmically re-photographed, the film emphasises the warm tones and textures of crystal structures as well as an environment which, millions of years ago, housed an inland sea.

Soda (2017) 7 mins. Soda explores the forms and rhythms of bubbles. The film uses camera-less techniques (including scratching and rayogramming) intercut with footage of water in progressive stages of boiling.

Southern Climes (2018) 12 mins. Southern Climes documents and reimagines sedimentary rock forms and other geographical features found in the Tasmanian and Patagonian landscape.

Growing (2020) 10 mins. Shot at home in late spring, 'Growing' is a film which begins as a study of a domestic garden, but slowly grows and expands through printing and reprinting of the original footage into an exploration of pure colour, movement and abstraction.

Inside Outside (2023) 8 mins. A self-portrait during pregnancy, documenting physical changes while imagining the world outside as seen in utero.

Opaquing (2019) 12 mins. I often leave accidental fingerprints on my films. These leave behind incidental artifacts – brief flashes of white or black that record my tactile engagement with the film during the printing and editing process. ‘Opaquing’ extends and magnifies those accidents into something more purposeful. Using black ink and clear film I catalogued details and textures of my thumbs, hands and fingerprints; run through the projector, the rapid succession of prints become rhythmic, animated and abstracted

‘Salt’ (2018) 15 mins.

‘Southern Climes’ (2018) 12 mins.
