AFW is excited to present a mix of works from the NFSA and from local filmmakers that span generation and geography. Through their engagement with place and time, these works respectively conjure the idea of lost futures.

A rare screening of Sonia Leber’s early film, with music by David Chesworth, reveals the beginnings of their collaborative film and sound practice. Across four locations where it was possible to film unnoticed, Doubtful Invitation constructs a world haunted by speculative futures that shadow the everyday.

False memory sequence by Elena Betros López, 2021, 16mm, 9 min
Examines how personal and cultural memory is formed and informed by state institutions. The film refigures a historical image of Melbourne Museum when it was located at the present day State Library of Victoria. The work exposes how colonial ways of knowing can haunt future generations.
